Sutlej is the largest river in
Punjab. There are only three rivers in Punjab today. The first is the largest
river in Punjab, the second is Beas and the third is Ravi. The original source
of the river Sutlej is located in Tibet outside Punjab. In ancient times the
river Sutlej was known as Sutlutri. The Sutlej River originates from a lake
called Rakshasatal near Mansarovar in Tibet. The name of the river Sutlej
varies according to the region, as it originates from Tibet and is also known
by the Tibetan language as Langken Zhengbo. In other words, it is the Tibetan
name for the Sutlej. The river Sutlej continues on its way and enters from a
special place in India. The name of this place is Shipki La Pass. It is a type
of mountain road located in Kannur district of Himachal Pradesh. This pass is
the gateway to India for the Sutlej River through which the river begins its
journey in India. Sipli La Pass is located on the border of India and Tibet. It
is used for trade.
The river Sutlej flows through
different districts of Himachal Pradesh like Kanor, Shimla, Mandi, Bilaspur,
Una. The river Sutlej flows through Bhakra. Enters Punjab from Nangal in Ropar
district of Punjab. The Sutlej, meanwhile, has a long way to go. The Sutlej
River separates the Malwa region from Doaba and Majha. Budha Nala in Ludhiana
is a tributary of the Sutlej. The Sutlej joins the Beas at a special place in
Tarn Taran district of Punjab. This special place of nature is known as Hari Ke
Pattan. Similarly, the river crosses the border of Pakistan and joins the river
Chenab and builds a river called Panjnad near Bahawalpur, Pakistan. The river
then joins the Indus River in Pakistan and flows into the Arabian Sea.
The Sutlej River is
one of the major sources of prosperity in Punjab. The economy of Punjab is
dependent on agriculture and the water of Sutlej river in Punjab is mostly used
by farmers for irrigation. Many canals have been constructed for this purpose
which is benefiting the agriculture of Punjab. One of the largest dams in the
world named Bhakra Dam which is constructing a lake is named after the tenth
Guru Gobind Singh Ji of the Sikhs Gobind Sagar Lake. Bhakra Dam is located in
Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh. Another dam named Nangal Dam is located in Ropar
district of Punjab. Sometimes in common parlance the two dams are pronounced
together as Bhakra-Nangal dam but in reality these two dams are different. The
river Sutlej flows through in total 9 districts of Punjab. The names of those
districts are as follows - Ropar, Nawanshahr, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Kapurthala,
Tarn Taran, Moga, Ferozepur and Fazilka.
